Thirty minutes later, Cat and JD settled into a booth at Dave’s Diner. The place bustled with people. The clatter of cutlery and crockery combined with the patrons’ voices to form a steady buzz. From the half-open kitchen behind the counter, the scent of garlic and fried food wafted into the restaurant area. Cat’s mouth watered from hunger. Apparently, the maritime climate not only made her tired but also stimulated her appetite.

“Hi. Welcome back.” Annie, the waitress, said to Cat. She pointed at JD with her pencil. “Is that why you’re here? Interviewing him? You must be really persuasive then.”

“Why is that?”

“Because he doesn’t do interviews.” Annie rolled her big blue eyes. “I should know. I asked like a thousand times, and he always said no.”

Cat looked at JD. “You did? You told her you don’t do interviews, but then you go on the Portia in the Morning show?”

JD shifted in his seat. “That was a rare exception.”

“You should make an exception for Annie, too. She is a bright future journalist. You should help a young, ambitious person out.”

Cat didn’t understand why he was so reticent. The interview wouldn’t be a burden for him, but it would mean so much to Annie. He, of all people, should know what it was like to be a young person dreaming of a writing career.

JD looked down and pressed each tine of his fork with his index finger. “I don’t like being the center of the public’s attention.”

Cat just about laughed. “Are you serious? The—” She looked up at Annie. “What’s your paper called again?”

“The Orchard Gazette,” supplied Annie.

“Ah, yes, The Orchard Gazette. I wouldn’t exactly call that the public.” She made air quotes with her fingers. “This is just your hometown.”

He lifted his head. “Exactly. Everyone knows me and my story, anyway. No need to write about it.”

“I’m sure Annie would find an interesting angle to the story. Right, Annie?”

Annie put on a bright smile and nodded enthusiastically.

“See?” When JD didn’t answer, Cat added: “Do it for me? Please?”

“Yes, do it for her,” Annie chimed in. “Puh-leeze!”

Smiling, JD lifted his hands in defeat. “Alright, I’ll do it. Anything to get the two of you off my back and some food in front of me.” He looked at Annie questioningly.

Annie snapped to attention. She pulled out her writing pad. “Sure. What can I get you?”

When Annie had left, Cat asked: “So you are saying I was lucky to meet you at all at Portia in the Morning? Why did you make an exception for her?”

“As a favor to my sister.”

“I don’t get it.”

“Kim is a publicist. My publicist. She made me go on the show.”

“You have a publicist, even though you hate the public? That’s kind of weird.”

“When Kim first started her own business, she needed clients. References, you know. So, I said she could sign me up.”

That was sweet of him. “And now you’re going along with everything to help her? You must really love her.”

JD shrugged. “Of course I love her. She’s my baby sister.
